DESCRIPTION

Nornalup is a tiny town on the South Coast Highway not far east of Walpole.

The town sits on the bank of the Frankland River and consists of little more than a group of private houses.

It is the area around Nornalup that attracts visitors as there are many things to see and do. Attractions such as Tree-top Walk, William Bay, Parry Beach and Peaceful Bay bring people from far and wide.

The relaxed and tranquil setting of the Frankland River and Nornalup Inlet combined with magnificent forests and rugged wilderness all combine to make this area one of the most attractive in the state.

The area's swamps and river are the perfect habitat for tiger snakes as there is an abundance of frogs for them to hunt.

HISTORY

First settled in 1910 by Pierre and Andre Bellanger, the town is surrounded by karri forest.

Nornallup Inlet was first surveyed in 1831 by Captain Thomas Bannister and the name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word for tiger snake.

Although a townsite called Nornallup Inlet was surveyed in 1911 it was cancelled in 1924. The current townsite was gazetted in 1933.
